Okka Gundel: "I have also started small time"

She is now a familiar face in the ARD sports coverage: Okka Gundel (34), born in Aurich, East Friesland, now lives with her husband, Karsten (39) and their daughter Carlotta (2) in Cologne.
Why they opted for sports journalism, and how these career embarks best, she says in the X-scouts interview.
EXPRESS: Ms. Gundel, when you have decided to become a sports presenter? Okka Gundel: At the age of 20 years, I attended the French Open in Paris. Only then I came to the decision to be active in journalism.
As your career then went from the school up to the camera? Journalistic I have also started small, with an internship at the "East Frisian news" in Aurich. After leaving school I studied for a year in Paris. Back in Germany I then sport and journalism in Gottingen, and later studied in Nice.
What would you advise young people who want to become sports journalists? What is the perfect introduction? I definitely recommend an internship or freelance work for a local newspaper or at a local radio station, quiet even as a student. It does not necessarily start with sports. Rather, it is important to know once a drafting process and see how paper is made. Another possibility is to make their own sports club for the press work. Bringing that the results in the paper, serving the office or with a few extra lines.
What should come after that? "Actually, you do not necessarily studying sport if you want to be a sports journalist. But of course it does not harm either to spend studying in a sporting environment. The German Sport University, for example even offers different courses.
Was it your goal to come before the camera, and how did it happen? "I got the opportunity to take a program at the WDR-internship. That I have brought it before the camera, has over time shown by a casting.
How do you assess the German television program in general? You have to specifically turn on. It will not do that simply turns on the TV and can then expect to see something good.
In addition to the sports broadcasts: What are your favorite shows? "I look very happy on Sunday evening before the" Linden Street "and the" crime scene ", preferably Ballauf & Schenk. However, I am taking on such shipments. For sports journalists at the weekend are often professionally in use.
What gave you the absolute highlight in their career to date? "My most interesting interview was with former Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann after the 2:5 against Bremen. Also, the DFB Cup final in Berlin was great.
